Although the Fuso-class ships, Fuso and Yamashiro, were considered slightly inferior in combat capabilities compared to other Japanese battleships, they participated in Operation Sho-Ichi-Go, a joint Japanese Navy effort carried out late in the war, and met a tragic end in the Surigao Strait. The Ise-class ships, Ise and Hyuga, were converted into aircraft carriers mid-war, retaining the gunfire of battleships while also being equipped with aviation capabilities. Although they were not given many opportunities to demonstrate their true worth, they continued to serve until the end of the war.
